Analysis: Kansas eSANZ Player Ratings Progression

February 2, 2006

I thought it would be a good idea to take a look at the progression of the other ratings system I employ (on the free blog) called the eSANZ.  In short, eSANZ is a relative rating system, which means that it only provides insight as to how well a player is playing on his own team.  It's still very valuable information in deducing the dynamics of the team and how that can create keys to the game.

Anyway, I've broken it up into two charts, one for the frontcourt and the other the backcourt.  I've excluded Downs, Vinson, Case, and Kleinmann from this analysis because they either don't play enough or not on the team anymore.  Click on the link below each heading to see the chart:

One thing that struck me was how Moody and Kaun seem to be opposite refelections of each other.  I hypothesize that this could be because they don't play well together for some reason.  On one hand, you might expect that two players who started together for a while would alternate sometimes between who gets the stats each game, but I believe that if they play well together, the players' ratings should go up and down together.

From this chart it looks as though Wright and Kaun fit that bill, as do Jackson and Wright.  This is good, because our starting lineup is now Wright and Kaun, and it seems many of KU's runs come about when Wright and Jackson are in the game together.

On the perimeter, the story is much easier to decipher.  Early in the season, Robinson and Vinson tracked well together, while Chalmers was trending down and away from them.  But once Mario kicked it into gear, he joined Robinson's path.  The two rose together to join Rush as solid performers (Chalmers actually overtook Rush in these ratings).

Hawkins' ratings have been completely independent of this group, suggesting that perhaps his play is not well-coordinated with any of the other players.  He just has good and bad games (mostly bad) on his own.
