Offensive and Defensive Performance

Using the outcome of the game and the adjusted offensive and defensive efficiencies for each team, performance indicates (in PTS per 100 Possessions) how each team would have fared against an average team.  That is, KU's offensive performance is how many points per 100 possessions KU would have scored against an average defense.  This provides a standard performance we can compare across teams.

(pts per 100 poss) Kansas La Salle
Offensive Performance
124.8 110.7
Defensive Performance 87.1 102.3

 Comments

When Kansas had the ball, it was a superb offense by the Jayhawks against an average La Salle defense.  When La Salle had the ball, both teams turned in very good performances, but KU's defense edged out LU's offense a bit.

Player Performance Analysis

Whose performance would get the most obvious attention after this game?  Obviously the freshman, Xavier Henry, who scored a career-high 31 points.  Yet, eyes should be equally on if not more on a guy who came off the bench.  Another day, another outstanding and efficient game from Markieff Morris.  This guy has been unbelievable for the Jayhawks so far this season.  Against La Salle, Markieff shot a mere 92 eFG% good for 12 PTS, 12 REB (3 OREB), 4 BLK, 2 AST, 1 STL and just 1 TO in 28 MIN.  His only blemish was going 1-of-4 from the FT line.  Back to Xavier Henry, though ... his game was incredible by its own merit.  80 eFG% (4-of-5 from 3FG) shooting propelled him to 31 PTS, 4 REB, 2 AST, 2 STL, 1 BLK and 2 TO in 29 MIN.

Cole Aldrich was his usual highly efficient self, while Elijah Johnson also had a strong game on paper.  Coach Self didn't like Johnson's play enough to keep him in though.  Elijah took no shots from the field (1-of-2 from FT) but snuck a couple of REB and AST with no obvious mistakes.  That was good for a strong but insufficiently robust rating.  Tyshawn Taylor, who has been the whipping boy of many fans, turned in one of his strongest performances of the season.  Finally shooting a respectable 58 eFG%, he threw in 10 PTS, 6 AST, 3 REB, 1 BLK and absolutely no turnovers.  Taylor appears to have responded well to his role off the bench, but we will see if that continues against the better upcoming opponents.

But it was a monumental struggle for the team's de facto leader, Sherron Collins.  In probably his worst shooting display as a Jayhawk (1-of-12 from the field), Collins also managed to foul 4 times (he rarely gets in foul trouble), made 2 TO and 0 STL but did dish out 6 AST.  Terrible night for Collins, but it showed that this KU team is so strong, it can weather the worst storm to one of its stars.

Though he's not a star, Tyrel Reed suffered quite a bit, shooting 0-of-2 and managing just 1 DREB in his 10 MIN stint.

La Salle had two or three solid performances with one absolutely horrendous one.

 FOUR FACTORS ADVANTAGES

 eFG%  KU 59-42%

TO Rate (lo better)  KU 20-17%
Shocking that KU didn't punish La Salle more in this category.
 O-Reb%  KU 46-35%
Excellent work, as La Salle had done a nice job of OREB before this game.
 FT Rate  KU 41-39%

 Four Factors Overall
Excellent display by KU as it won in every one of the key factors.  The biggest, by far, was the eFG% advantage with OREB% a distant second.
