Offensive and Defensive Performance

Using the outcome of the game and the adjusted offensive and defensive efficiencies for each team, performance indicates (in PTS per 100 Possessions) how each team would have fared against an average team.  That is, KU's offensive performance is how many points per 100 possessions KU would have scored against an average defense.  This provides a standard performance we can compare across teams.

Offensive Performance
135.4 107.2
Defensive Performance 93.9 109.2

 Comments

After a blistering second half, KU finished with a stellar offensive performance.  It didn't hurt that Radford's defense was well below average as well.  When Radford had the ball, both teams performed modestly better than average.

Player Performance Analysis

It was a great night for KU's bigger guys, not so much for the little guys except for the one who got his first starting nod, Elijah Johnson, and another freshman who rarely plays, C.J. Henry.  Johnson's shots were dropping well this night on 83 eFG% shooting, allowing him to finish with 11 PTS, 3 REB (2 OREB), 1 AST, 1 STL, and 0 TO.  He could have been shaken up when he had to sit down with his second foul before the first media timeout.  C.J. Henry, mature in age but not experienced on court yet, dominated the meaningless last few minutes of the game with 110 eFG% shooting (3-of-4 from 3FG) and finished with 11 PTS, 1 REB, 1 BLK and 0 TO in just 10 MIN.

Despite the numbers from those two freshmen, top impact honors go to two regular starters who are expected to carry this team, Xavier Henry and Cole Aldrich.  Henry did his usual good job of scoring (13 PTS on 61 eFG%) but also had 2 STL and 3 BLK (one at the end of the first half).  Aldrich stepped up to the challenge presented by the big Artsiom Parakhouski and dropped 15 PTS on 56 eFG% shooting, 5-of-6 from FT, 9 REB (3 OREB), 1 STL, 2 BLK and 2 TO in just 27 MIN.  Still, Aldrich rated significantly below his opponent in this game.  The problem for Radford was that Parakhouski got started pretty late, so it wasn't anywhere near as meaningful as Aldrich's points.

Perhaps one of the more exciting performances of the game belonged to KU's frosh big guy, Thomas Robinson.  He finally came out of his shell on offense and finished some strong moves, threw in a jumper and rebounded strong.  It was a complete performance for a change, as he shot 67 eFG%, made 2-of-3 from the line to finish with 10 PTS, 7 REB (1 OREB), 1 AST and 0 TO in 16 MIN.

Tough night for Sherron Collins with turnovers, otherwise his other numbers looked great.  But on an efficient night, those turnovers are more penalized.  Taylor shot poorly again (33 eFG%) but had some memorable dunks and breakaways, plus he had 0 turnovers.  But poor shooting hurt him yet again.  Tyrel Reed shot very poorly, and given his role on the team, he's not going to rate well at all when that happens.

We talked about Parakhouski's great night, but it was Lynch-Flohr that surprised people.  Who knew the (mini) sky-hook was so deadly?

 OVERALL RESULTS

Final Score  KU 91-55  KU 99-64

 Tempo (# poss)
77  72Slower tempo than projected but more points scored means both teams were more efficient than expected.

 FOUR FACTORS ADVANTAGES

 eFG%  KU 61-37%  KU 58-44%
A little less extreme on both sides than projected.
TO Rate (lo better)  KU 26-18%
 KU 19-11%

 O-Reb%  KU 38-33%
 KU 45-23%
Pretty sizable deviation from expectations.  Great job from KU on the boards.
 FT Rate  Tie 34%
 RU 50-33%
The reason that the unexpected rebounding domination didn't result in a significantly greater scoring margin than expected was RU's ability to get to the FT line.
 Four Factors Overall
KU will force RU into too many turnovers, but regardless the overwhelming advantage in eFG% will be too much to overcome with any other factor.
Everything but FT attempts were in favor of the Jayhawks for an all-around dominant performance.

Particularly disappointing games for KU's Markieff Morris and RU's Trifunovic who were supposed to do better than their averages.
