Offensive and Defensive Performance

Using the outcome of the game and the adjusted offensive and defensive efficiencies for each team, performance indicates (in PTS per 100 Possessions) how each team would have fared against an average team.  That is, KU's offensive performance is how many points per 100 possessions KU would have scored against an average defense.  This provides a standard performance we can compare across teams.

Defensive Performance 99.1 114.5

 Comments

KU was just phenomenal on offense, scoring 1.34 points per possession.  Though it was both KU's good offense and Oakland's bad defense, it was significantly more of the former.  Considering Oakland is rated a below average offensive team, though, the Jayhawks were only mediocre on defense.  This won't be the case after the team has been playing together a while.  As expected, the Grizzlies struggled on both ends of the ball, but mostly on defense.

Player Performance Analysis

Pick a Morris, any Morris.  He had a great game, didn't he?  While Markieff takes the efficiency crown home, it was Marcus who made the biggest impact of the night.  Whether it was turnarounds from the baseline or three-pointers, Marcus was really in a groove.  Shooting 70 eFG% and co-leading the team in scoring with 19 PTS, Morris also dominated the glass with 11 REB (6 OREB!), 1 AST, 1 STL and just 1 TO in 32 MIN.  Easily this was his best performance as a Jayhawk.  Not to be too far outdone by his brother, Markieff shot 117 eFG% (that's not a typo), although it was just 3 shots, and grabbed 4 REB with 1 STL and 1 BLK with 0 TO in just 13 MIN.  That's efficiency.

We saw another great performance by Xavier Henry, often aided by the passing of Sherron Collins.  Henry was co-leader in scoring (19 PTS) on 86 eFG% shooting with 5 REB, 2 AST and 1 TO.  His high-flying dunks energized the team in a "this is going to be an amazing season" kind of way.  Collins had an incredibly efficient first half but was fairly quiet in the second.

Elijah Johnson actually had a nice game by the numbers, although it would not have looked quite so good if not for his three-pointer luckily hitting the rim, popping straight up and finding its way in (similar to one of his free throws).  He shot only 50 eFG% (I say "only" because it's significantly lower than KU's team shooting of 58%) but gets credit also for 3 AST against 0 TO in just 13 MIN.

And now we know that Cole Aldrich is capable of having a bad game.  An unheard of 2-of-10 shooting performance was somewhat offset by 9 REB (5 OREB) and 3 BLK, but not enough to rate much better than an average college player (that's what 0.00 represents in PSAN ratings).  Still, Aldrich's numbers were better than the slumping Tyshawn Taylor.  The struggling shooting guard shot only 3-of-9 from the floor.  While he committed only 1 TO, he also dished only 2 AST.  It will be interesting to see how Self handles Taylor's slump.  Tyrel Reed is certainly not making things easy for Taylor.  Reed had another stellar game, shooting 100 eFG% (2-of-3 from 3FG) with a few other contributions sprinkled in.

No surprise that Keith Benson carried the load for Oakland and carried it well.  Though he didn't have stellar efficiency numbers, he clearly outplayed the All-American Aldrich to finish with 20 PTS and 6 REB on 54 eFG% shooting.  Derick Nelson's hot 3FG shooting was the only other major factor on the positive side for the Grizzlies.

 FOUR FACTORS ADVANTAGES

 eFG%  KU 62-33%  KU 58-40%

TO Rate (lo better)  Tie 22%  KU 18-9%
Surprise, surprise ... KU controls the ball for a change!
 O-Reb%  Oak 37-28%
 KU 42-26%
Just as most probably expected, KU won this battle.  Perhaps more handily than those people would have expected even.
 FT Rate  KU 60-18%
OAK 41-32%  Felt like there was always a Grizzly going to the line for a while there.
 Four Factors Overall
KU's overwhelming shooting advantage should seal the deal, while FT attempts advantage will put the nails in the coffin.  A modest advantage at the FT line can't overcome an enormous one from the field.
