Offensive and Defensive Performance

Using the outcome of the game and the adjusted offensive and defensive efficiencies for each team, performance indicates (in PTS per 100 Possessions) how each team would have fared against an average team.  That is, KU's offensive performance is how many points per 100 possessions KU would have scored against an average defense.  This provides a standard performance we can compare across teams.

(pts per 100 poss) Kansas Washington
Offensive Performance
119.9 113.3
Defensive Performance 75.2 123.8

 Comments

Although Washington performed below what an average team would do overall (add the difference between their performance on each end and the NCAA average), KU performed better than the average by over four times that amount.  So, this was a solid Jayhawks outing, particularly on the defensive end.  If KU holds opponents to 34.6 eFG% most games, they will be tough to beat.

When KU had the ball, both teams contributed nearly equally to KU's domination.  When UW had the ball, they actually performed above average, but the Jayhawks played defense par excellence.

Player Performance Analysis

Back-to-back games leave me little time for detailed analysis.  Note that the only KU players who played enough minutes and had better than zero ratings on both offense and defense were:  Aldrich, Collins, Taylor, Morningstar and Markieff Morris.  There were many KU fans who complained that Morningstar got minutes that maybe should have been given to Travis Releford, but note that Morningstar came through particularly on defense, on a night when it was really defense that made it a convincing victory for the Jayhawks.  On the UW side, just note that the much-hyped Jon Brockman had an overall neutral game despite his career-high 18 REBS.  That's saying a lot.

TO Rate (lo better)  KU 22-15%
 O-Reb% UW 43-25%
 FT Rate KU 27-14%
 Bottom Line
The ridiculous advantage on the boards for UW ended up giving them a paltry 5.7 points extra, mostly because they were just so anemic on offense overall.  That advantage was essentially negated by the turnovers or by the FT line discrepancy ... take your pick.  Either way, UW needed to do a lot to overcome miserable shooting.
