Comments and Observations

KU fans probably couldn't help but cringe at the Jayhawks' inability to pull away in the first ten minutes or so of the game, but the outcome was never in doubt.  Brandon Rush's first game back was also KU's first smothering defensive effort of the season.  Purely coincidence?  Probably, since Rush only played 12 MIN off the bench.  It sure was nice to see all the missed shots from the opponent, no matter what division they play in.

Four Factor Analysis

  • eFG% - KU scorches yet again for 60% and puts in first good shooting defense of season, as Washburn manages only 42%.
  • TURNOVERS - In favor of KU 26-19%
  • OFFENSIVE REBOUNDING - Edge to KU, 43-37%.  Washburn got 37% on the offensive glass?  Wow.
  • FREETHROW RATE (FTM/FGA) - 31-15% in favor of Kansas.
What did the difference in this
statistic mean to each team?

CONCLUSION - Identical profile as the last game.  KU shot the ball much better from the field and took way more free throw attempts than Washburn.  If WU hadn't held their own on the offensive glass, and KU had made a higher FT percentage, this could have been embarrassing for them.

Player Performance Analysis

Welcome back, Brandon Rush!  And what a return.  He was the most efficient player on the court except for Conner Teahan, who played mostly against reserves.  In 12 MIN, Rush shot 70 eFG% to score 7 PTS, 3 REB and 2 AST.  Not bad at all.  This had to be one of the most balanced team efforts I've seen in my ratings.  Not much separation in ratings for KU's top four (Jackson, Rush, Teahan, Stewart).

Darrell Arthur's rating appears disappointing, particularly so because of the weak competition.  His stats don't actually look bad at first glance.  In 25 MIN, he had 14 PTS, 5 REB, 2 STL, 2 BLK, 1 TO on 4-of-8 FG and 6-of-8 FT shooting.  Here's the catch.  KU has been scoring so efficiently on offense, and so many baskets are assisted that the value of a made 2FG has actually been less than the penalty for a missed 2FG in every game thus far.  DA would have had to shoot over 50% for his FG's to provide a positive boost.  Additionally, none of his rebounds were on the offensive end.  Since Washburn's offense was so anemic, defensive rebounds and BLK weren't actually that valuable in this game for KU.

Kaun came back with a stronger effort, particularly in the second half.  He finished with 10 PTS, 7 REB (4 OREB) and made all 4 FG's.  As usual, he struggled at the FT line.  Tough game for Robinson and Aldrich.  Robinson didn't shoot well from the perimeter (1-of-4) and made 4 TO's.  Aldrich struggled from the field (1-of-5) and the line (1-of-3).  Tyrel Reed had a fair performance but didn't play too many minutes.  Chalmers had a solid outing with nothing too spectacular.  Jeremy Case had about as tough a game as possible for someone in his position.
